Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bend Health Coaching?

Bend Health coaches help understand and implement powerful techniques to better manage life. They teach skills and help families practice them in real-life situations. Coaches will work with individuals and families or as part of a larger care team collaborating with therapists, psychiatrists, and pediatricians.

Our highly trained coaches are matched with kids and teens based on specialty or primary condition. Bend Health coaches are also tech-savvy, comfortable with telehealth, and have a strong desire to work with kids and teens to help them reach their goals. In addition, we train all coaches on mental health, associated symptoms, motivational enhancement techniques, safety planning, and triaging. We also train them on the impact of stigma and diversity of mental health conditions, symptoms, and interventions.

Let’s face it, we could all use a little help from a coach now and then and Bend Health Coaching is a great way to help more families get ahead of stress, anxiety, and depression before it escalates.

What concerns does coaching address?

Through Bend Health coaching, we can help with:

  • Parenting concerns
  • LGBTQIA+ affirmation and support
  • Stress
  • Sleep issues
  • Anger issues
  • Worries and anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma (if already being treated by a therapist)
  • Executive functioning concerns
  • ADHD
  • OCD

We recognize that not everything is a condition and we have developed specific care plans for parents who just need tips and information.

How do I sign up for Bend Health?

To get started, click Get Started above. The process takes less than 15 minutes. First, create a parent or guardian account and add your family member(s). Second, complete a brief medical history and take an assessment of recent thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

From there, we will design a care plan for you and reach out to schedule your first appointment.

What is the Bend Health care experience like?

During your time with us, expect to have video meetings and messaging sessions with mental health coaches. They help members understand how one’s environment, thoughts, emotions and behaviors contribute to how they are feeling or behaving — and they help find ways to make changes for the better!

Also, Bend Health coaches will help coordinate with schools and outside providers if needed.  At the same time, if your family does need more intensive care, coaches will collaborate with your existing clinicians or, if you choose, can quickly connect you to a Bend Health therapist or child/adolescent psychiatric provider.

Does Bend Health accept insurance?

Yes. Coaching is a benefit available through your employer or Optum Benefit.

Is Bend Health available in my area?

Bend Health Coaching works with families and kids/teens under the age of 18 in all 50 states.

How do I access Bend Health?

Bend Health’s app functions within the browser or on your smartphone. There is no need to download anything. Just tell us a little about your kid and/or teen's history and get started. Once care begins, your coach will communicate directly with you about your kid/teen’s progress, as well as the family in general.

Do I need a referral to see a coach?

You do not need a referral to see a Bend Health mental health coach.

Who is my primary contact on my care team?

Every family works directly with their mental health coach to ensure that their child or teen gets ahead of severe stress, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and other conditions before they escalate. If more care is needed, our coaches can layer in additional care through Bend Health, which includes direct access to therapists and child/adolescent psychiatrists. Regardless of your care plan specifics though, your Bend Health coach is with you every step of the way.

Who is Bend Health Coaching NOT for?

If you or your child are experiencing an emergency, please call 911.

It’s best to seek care in person if:

  • Your child has thoughts of hurting themselves or others.
  • Your child is in an urgent crisis situation.
  • Your child has been diagnosed with a severe mental illness, severe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), or severe cognitive or intellectual impairment.
  • Your child/teen or family is actively exposed to an unsafe environment that prevents engagement in trauma care (ex. those with an active child protection investigation).
  • Your child was required to undergo an evaluation either by a court order or by any other authority including custody evaluations.
  • Your child has eating disorder symptoms.
  • Your child is hearing voices or has delusions (ex. persistent thoughts someone is out to get them or hurt them).
  • Your child is in need of detox for a substance they are using in excess.

What if I need more intensive care?

If more intensive care or medications are needed, our coaches will quickly get you to the Bend Health therapist or child/adolescent psychiatrist who is best suited for your family.

Are Bend Health coaches licensed therapists?

While coaches are not therapists, our coaches do practice evidence-based techniques helping members and their families/caregivers understand and implement powerful tools to better manage their lives. Bend Health coaches are trained professionals working with members with low-to-moderate symptoms to gain a better understanding of themselves, others in their lives, and the world around them. Bend Health coaches are supervised by licensed practitioners.

Bend Health coaches are professionals. They participate in our rigorous vetting process to ensure they are suitable to work with kids, teens, and families and they must be either ICF-certified, a national board certified health and wellness coach, or have a masters degree in a psychology field and are unlicensed.
